Weekend Markets and Car-Free Days Are Moving Into Bekasi Housing Estates: Five Things to Check

Bekasi City ran its first "1001 People's Markets × Car Free Day" pilot inside a housing estate on Sunday, 4 October 2026, and wants other estates to follow. For residents and buyers, that touches road access, parking, rubbish, and a chance to sell from home.

Bekasi City has started bringing street markets into housing estates. On Sunday, 4 October 2026, the city ran a pilot called "1001 People's Markets × Car Free Day" at the Savira Cooperative in the Vida Bekasi estate. Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar attended alongside Mayor Tri Adhianto.

The format is simple. An estate road closes to cars for the morning and fills with small-business stalls and cooperative activities. The mayor was clear about where he wants this to go: housing estates, he said, should become more than places to live and could serve as centres for people's markets (as reported by Metropolitan.id and Wawainews).

Muhaimin called the estate a model other regions could copy. The city's target matches the name: 1,001 sites. Figures shared at the event put Bekasi City's small businesses at about 350,000, with around 165,000 licensed through the Public Service Mall.

What Already Runs, and What Is Still a Hope

Here is where things stand on 5 October 2026, based on coverage of the 4 October event:

"Hoped" is the operative word. There's no date and no mayoral regulation setting out the details yet. Tri Adhianto said only that the city can help manage market needs, from stall rent and cleaning to parking and electricity (RRI, 4 October 2026). The specifics for each estate will be worked out with its manager.

Why a Buyer Should Care

A weekly market near home is a nice thing to have. Vegetables, snacks, and kitchen basics on a morning walk. But a car-free day also means one or more estate roads closed to cars for a few hours every week, with hundreds of visitors from outside. If the house you want sits right on that route, Sunday mornings will feel very different from the rest of the week.

So before you sign a sale agreement in an estate that has, or may get, a people's market, check these five things.

1. How you get in and out while the road is closed. Visit on a Sunday morning, not just a weekday. See whether a car can still reach the house by another road, or has to wait until the event packs up. That matters if someone in the family works weekends or needs regular hospital trips.

2. Where the house sits relative to the event. Homes on the estate's main boulevard get the full crowd: music, loudspeakers, people walking past the gate. Homes on smaller inner streets usually just hear it from a distance and keep their road open.

3. Who runs it, and under what rules. The pilot went through a cooperative. Ask the estate manager or the RW (neighbourhood) committee who approves stalls, what time things start and finish, where visitors park, and whether written rules exist. If road closures for community events aren't clearly governed yet, the permit pattern is similar to closing a cluster road for a family celebration.

4. The rubbish afterwards. Hundreds of visitors leave plastic and food waste behind. Find out who cleans the road once the stalls close, and whether that cost comes out of residents' estate fees (IPL) or the organiser's budget. We've covered how household waste fees work in our piece on Bekasi City's waste levy.

5. A business opportunity for residents. This side gets overlooked. If you or your partner run a home food business, a stall at the estate market is a cheap shop window. Get a business ID (NIB) through the OSS system, and read the rules for running a business from a cluster home before the kitchen turns into a production line.

The cheapest test there is: visit the estate twice, on a Wednesday afternoon and at 7 a.m. on a Sunday. If both feel fine, you're buying with a lot more confidence.

The View From Jl. Raya Perjuangan

Kingspoint Private Residences on Jl. Raya Perjuangan, Bekasi Utara, is a small cluster. Its inner roads aren't the wide boulevards that big estates use for car-free days. The neighbours are the interesting part. Summarecon, one of the areas the mayor named, is about 5 minutes away, and Harapan Indah, which already has a car-free day, is also on the north side of the city.

If those plans go ahead, residents of a small cluster get the Sunday market without their own street being closed. For now, treat it as a plan. What's already there around Bekasi Utara, from markets and food spots to quick access to Bekasi Station and Summarecon Mall, is a firmer basis for judging the location.

Frequently asked questions

A Bekasi City programme that pairs car-free days with community markets inside housing estates. The pilot ran on Sunday, 4 October 2026, at the Savira Cooperative in the Vida Bekasi estate, with Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Muhaimin Iskandar and Mayor Tri Adhianto attending.

Which areas of Bekasi City already have a car-free day?
Reports from 4 October 2026 list three: Jalan Ahmad Yani, the Vida estate, and Harapan Indah. The city hopes Galaxy, Lagoon, and Summarecon will join, but no dates have been announced.

Can residents run a stall at an estate market?
