A snake that gets into a house in the rainy season is usually following food, looking for a dry spot, or it hatched nearby. You can cut down the first two now, before regular rain arrives in northern Kota Bekasi.
In its 2026/2027 Rainy Season Outlook, published in September, BMKG (Indonesia's weather agency) puts the start of the rainy season for the northern Kota Bekasi zone in the third ten-day period of December 2026, two periods later than normal, with the peak expected in February 2027. October and November are still the transition, which leaves enough time to tidy up the house.
Why the Rainy Season Brings Snakes
Reptile researcher Amir Hamidy of LIPI (now BRIN) told Medcom in December 2019 that the rainy season is the right period for young cobras to hatch. The same article noted that a female cobra lays roughly 12 to 20 eggs, which hatch in three to four months. The exact month is still debated. Medcom, in a report quoting IPB herpetologist Mirza Kusrini, noted that the literature has not established that cobra eggs hatch in December, while snake watchers generally point to the start of the rainy season.
In Kota Bekasi, Medcom reported in December 2019 that about 50 young cobras and four adults were removed over roughly a month, and one Medcom photo showed an adult cobra found in a Jakasampurna neighbourhood. Eko Budi, a rescue officer with the Kota Bekasi fire department at the time, linked it to shrinking open land, swamps and rice fields, which push snakes into neighbourhoods to hunt prey such as geckos. A year later, in November 2020, dozens of snake eggs were found in a storeroom at a house in Mustika Jaya.
A new house in a gated cluster is not automatically safe from snakes, especially if the land around it is still empty or under construction.
5 Spots to Check in a Two-Storey House
1. Gaps under the front and back doors
Newly hatched snakes are small and slim, so a gap that looks trivial to us is enough for them. Fit a rubber or brush door seal along the bottom of doors that open onto the carport and garden.
2. Floor drains and outlets
Drains in the bathroom, laundry area and carport connect to the outside channel. Use lockable drain covers or the type with a non-return flap. Seal any unused pipe openings as well, such as an old AC pipe route or a water pipe moved during renovation.
3. Piles in the carport and storeroom
Moving boxes, leftover cement bags, timber and stacked pots are favourite hiding places. The Mustika Jaya eggs were found in a storeroom. Get things off the floor onto shelves and clear them out now and then. When you do, wear thick gloves and move items with a broom handle first instead of reaching in.
4. Snake food: rats, frogs, geckos
Snakes follow their prey, so a house with rats will draw them. Keep rice and pet food in sealed containers, take kitchen waste out every day, and deal with rats first. We cover how in our article on ants, cockroaches and rats in the kitchen.
5. The small garden and the drain out front
Tall grass, dense shrubs against the wall and drains clogged with leaves give snakes a shaded path to the porch. Trim plants back from the walls and ask the estate manager or RT to schedule drain cleaning before regular rain starts. Clear drains also mean less standing water and fewer mosquitoes, as in our 3M Plus dengue protocol.
If the Snake Is Already Inside
Move children and pets away, close the door to that room if it is safe, watch from a few metres back, and call 112. Do not try to catch or hit it.
Kota Bekasi runs an emergency line called Patriot Siaga 112, set up by Mayor's Regulation (Perwal) No. 32 of 2024, in force since 1 January 2025. Article 6 lists "evakuasi hewan liar" (wild animal removal) among its services, and the annex names the city's Fire and Rescue Department (Dinas Pemadam Kebakaran dan Penyelamatan) as the first agency for animal rescue and dangerous-animal removal. Calls to 112 are free, and the call agents work around the clock.
When you call, give the full address (cluster name, block, house number), where the snake is, and roughly how big it is. A photo taken from a safe distance helps, because handling a cobra is different from handling a common rat snake. The Javan spitting cobra can also spray venom towards the eyes, so do not move in close for a picture. If venom gets in someone's eyes, rinse with plenty of clean running water and go to the ER.
If Someone Is Bitten
Indonesia's Ministry of Health has a 2023 guideline on bites, stings and poisoning, the Pedoman Penanganan Gigitan, Sengatan Hewan Berbisa dan Keracunan Tumbuhan dan Jamur. According to the Ministry of Health and WHO guidance summarised by detikJabar, keep the person calm, keep the bitten limb still with a splint or a loose elastic bandage, note the time of the bite, and get to a health facility quickly. Antivenom cannot be given at home and not every hospital stocks it, so when you call 112, ask which ER is ready.
According to the same detikJabar summary, the Ministry of Health guideline rules out sucking the wound, cutting it, heating or burning it, and traditional remedies. It also says not to tie the limb as tight as possible, and not to give hot or cold compresses, coffee or alcohol. WHO guidance adds one more step: take off rings or bracelets near the bite before swelling starts.
The only antivenom made in Indonesia comes from Bio Farma and covers three species: the Javan spitting cobra (Naja sputatrix), the banded krait and the Malayan pit viper. A 2016 study in Scientific Reports found its potency against Javan cobra venom was weak, so larger doses may be needed. Do not wait for symptoms. Through 112, emergency ambulance calls are routed to the city health office, RSUD dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid and PMI Kota Bekasi.
For Cluster Residents in Bekasi Utara
A two-storey house like the Emerald 70 at Kingspoint on Jl. Raya Perjuangan has the same weak points: the door to the carport, the floor drains and wherever you store things. The five checks above fit into one weekend. If you are going over the house before the rains anyway, check the roof and canopy too, as in our article on windstorms and the late rainy season. Save 112 in every family member's phone, including your household helper's.
