Most kitchens have a bottle of used frying oil sitting somewhere with no plan for it. It is too dark to cook with again, it clogs the sink if you pour it away, and it leaks all over the bin bag if you throw it out. In Bekasi City, one more place for that oil was announced on 19 October 2026.
On Monday, 19 October 2026, the Bekasi City Government signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Hassana Hijau Indonesia to open a digital waste station. The signing took place at the morning assembly in the Pemkot Bekasi plaza, as reported by Gobekasi.id. The station takes inorganic waste that still has resale value, such as plastic, and it also takes household used cooking oil, known locally as minyak jelantah. Alun-Alun Kota Bekasi, the city square, is named as the first pilot site.
How the Alun-Alun waste station works
As designed, residents hand over sorted waste, the drop-off is logged automatically, and it turns into points or digital wallet balance. Mayor Tri Adhianto said the collected waste will be recorded digitally, become points, and be converted into balance. Large electronic waste will be picked up from people's homes.
Several details have not been announced yet: the start date, the price per litre of oil, the name of the app or e-wallet, opening hours, and when the service will reach other districts. Make sure the station is actually running before carrying a full jerrycan over from North Bekasi.
Three routes for kitchen oil
Two other routes were running before the waste station arrived. Here is how they compare:
| Route | What you get | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pemkot Bekasi waste station (Alun-Alun) | Points, converted to digital balance | Start date, price per litre and hours not yet announced |
| Pertamina UCollect Box | E-wallet balance, around Rp4,000–5,000 per litre (August 2026) | Find the nearest machine in the MyPertamina app |
| Neighbourhood waste bank or collector | Waste-bank savings or cash | Not every waste bank takes oil |
UCollect Box is a collection machine that Pertamina runs with Noovoleum at a number of petrol stations and other sites. At launch in January 2025 the price was reported at about Rp6,000 per litre. Detik reported on 27 August 2026 that it can now reach Rp4,000 to Rp5,000 per litre. The machine measures the volume itself and pays into a registered e-wallet. Yoga Pratama of Pertamina's downstream subholding named Jabodetabek sites including petrol stations on Abdul Muis and Fatmawati in Jakarta. We could not find an official list of UCollect sites in Bekasi City, so check the location menu in the MyPertamina app before you set off.
Waste banks run by neighbourhood associations each set their own rules. Some accept oil in jerrycans, others only handle paper and plastic. How waste banks work inside a cluster is covered in waste banks and sorting in North Bekasi clusters.
Storing used oil so it gets accepted
Whichever route you use, oil that is free of food scraps and not mixed with water is easier to hand over. Four steps cover it:
1. Let it cool, then strain it
Pour the oil once it has cooled, through a tea strainer or thin cloth, so batter crumbs and bits of food stay behind. Hot oil can soften a plastic bottle.
2. Use a container with a tight lid
An old water or cooking-oil bottle is fine. Label it so nobody mixes it up with fresh oil, especially if a helper or the kids also cook.
3. Keep water out
Do not rinse the bottle before filling it, and do not mix the oil with water from washing the pan. Water makes the oil spoil faster and harder to process.
4. Store it out of the sun
The cupboard under the stove or a shaded corner of the storeroom works. Collect one or two large bottles before dropping them off, so the trip is worth it.
Why not the sink or the drain
Oil that is liquid when hot sets solid in a cold pipe, then traps food scraps until the pipe narrows. Bekasi City's Regional Regulation No. 5 of 2018 on domestic wastewater names the kitchen grease and oil trap as part of the wastewater service subsystem (Article 13), and Article 43 lists cleaning it as maintenance. Grease traps, the signs of a pipe starting to block, and typical plumber costs are covered in blocked kitchen drains and sinks in a two-storey house.
Pouring it into the gutter outside or onto the garden soil is no better. A film of oil slows the water in the neighbourhood drains, and in heavy rain a slow drain overflows sooner.
When choosing a house, find the inspection chamber
If you are viewing the Emerald 70 house at Kingspoint on Jl. Raya Perjuangan, North Bekasi (two storeys, 70 m² of floor space), or any house in any cluster, ask where the inspection chamber and grease trap are so you know which points need opening every few months. Keep the oil bottle in a kitchen cupboard and take it along next time you pass the city square or a petrol station.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I drop off used cooking oil in Bekasi City?
Alun-Alun Kota Bekasi is named as the digital waste station pilot site in the memorandum signed on 19 October 2026; the start date has not been announced. Other options are Pertamina's UCollect Box (find locations in the MyPertamina app) and neighbourhood waste banks that accept oil.
How much is used cooking oil worth per litre?
According to Detik (27 August 2026), Pertamina's UCollect Box buys used oil at around Rp4,000 to Rp5,000 per litre. The waste station price in Bekasi has not been announced.
Can I put used oil in the regular bin?
If you have to, seal it in a bottle so it does not spill onto other rubbish. Dropping it at the waste station, UCollect or a waste bank is better, because the oil gets processed again and you get something back.
