Moving Home Before the New School Year: 60-Day Timeline for Bekasi Families

May and June are the peak months when families relocate to Bekasi — because their kids start the new school year in July. Three families who pulled it off and one who got caught short walk through what to do when, and why the school transfer date at the Bekasi City Education Office (Disdik) is the linchpin most parents miss.

Last Saturday morning at a café near Bekasi Station, I sat with Mrs Astrid as she kept refreshing her phone. Her daughter Naya — fourth grade — had finally received her acceptance letter from a new school in Bekasi Utara, twenty-eight days into the transfer process. Mrs Astrid is the fourth family I've interviewed this month about moving home for the school year.

The pattern is clear: May-June is the heaviest window for families moving to Bekasi every year. Not coincidence. Kids start school mid-July, so families need at least four to six weeks to settle in before the first day. What gets underestimated: the school transfer process at Bekasi City Disdik takes 14-21 working days on its own, plus 5-7 days for the receiving school to verify.

This isn't a generic moving checklist. It's a 60-day timeline drawn from three families who moved in May 2024, June 2024, and May 2025 — plus one who almost missed the deadline and ended up in administrative trouble.

Why the May-June Window Is Tight

Primary, junior high, and senior high schools in Bekasi City start the academic year between July 14-21 (Kemendikbud calendar). That means the school transfer process must wrap up by end of June. Bekasi City Education Office opens transfer counters in May-June with daily quotas, and those quotas fill quickly toward late June.

If the move only completes on July 1, the child's school transfer often gets pushed to the next semester — or the kid has to "borrow" a desk at the old school with a brutal daily commute. Both scenarios played out for Mr Iqbal's family, and he lost three months on extra transport fees.

Family 1: Mr Andre — Moved May 5, Three Kids in Primary and Junior High

Mr Andre and his wife moved from Cibubur to a Bekasi Utara cluster on May 5, 2024. Three kids: Kayla (sixth grade), Rafif (eighth grade), Lana (fifth grade). Three different schools, three parallel transfer processes.

What he got right: started the move-out paperwork at his old RT/RW in March. Picked up the kids' report cards in late April. Registered at the new schools in Bekasi Utara on May 8 — three days after moving in. All three transfers wrapped up May 24, two weeks before the Disdik deadline. The kids walked into their new schools on July 15 without drama.

Mr Andre's total moving cost: Rp 18.5 million. That covered the Cibubur-to-Bekasi moving truck (Rp 4.2 m), school transfer fees for three kids (Rp 1.8 m total with new-school admin), three sets of new uniforms (Rp 4.5 m), books and supplies (Rp 3.2 m), and the rest for small unit repairs and the PLN deposit. The full breakdown of moving costs is in the moving checklist guide.

Family 2: Mrs Lia — Moved June 12, Almost Too Late

Mrs Lia's case was different. The new home's KPR closed in late May because her loan was held up at appraisal. She moved in June 12, 2024 — one child, Devano in ninth grade.

She started Devano's transfer paperwork before the move, on May 28. Picked up the report card from the old school in Bintara, processed the transfer authorization from Disdik Bekasi Selatan to Bekasi Utara, then registered at the new school in the Perjuangan area on June 14. Wrapped up July 1 — two weeks before school started. Tight.

The bottleneck: the "domicile certificate" she needed from her new neighborhood office only issued five days after she got her new ID card processed at the civil registry office (Disdukcapil). The ID itself took seven working days. Twelve days for what should be a "request a letter" task. Mrs Lia's lesson: if you're moving in June, sort out domicile paperwork before the physical move — use a temporary letter from the developer if needed.

Her emergency document costs

DocumentTimeCost
New address ID at Bekasi Disdukcapil7 working daysRp 0 (free)
Domicile certificate from neighborhood office5 working daysRp 50,000 (admin)
Move-out letter from old RT/RW2 daysRp 0
Transfer authorization from Disdik Bekasi Selatan4 working daysRp 75,000
New school transfer admin file3 working daysRp 350,000
Total Mrs Lia (paperwork only)21 working daysRp 475,000

Family 3: Mr Iqbal — Moved June 28, Transfer Was Late

Mr Iqbal moved on June 28, 2024. His closing was delayed six weeks because the developer's master title only finished sub-division to individual units in late May. Once he got the unit, the move had to be fast — his son Razka in fifth grade had to start school July 14.

He tried to file the school transfer on July 1. The Disdik counter in Bekasi City was already booked through July 9, with an additional 14-day processing estimate. That meant the transfer would only complete around July 25 — eleven days after school had already started.

Mr Iqbal's interim solution: keep Razka at his old school in Pondok Gede for three months, with Mr Iqbal driving him morning and evening. Total extra transport cost: Rp 3.2 million across July-September. The transfer finally cleared mid-October, Razka changed schools mid-semester, and adapting was hard because he joined his new class halfway through.

The Practical 60-Day Timeline (Drawn from Three Cases)

If you're targeting a May-June move with kids starting school in July, this timeline emerged consistently:

DayActionWhy
Day -60 to -45Visit 2-3 target schools in Bekasi Utara, ask about next-semester transfer quotasPopular private schools (Al-Azhar, BPK Penabur, Sekolah Mutiara Bunda) fill fast — some close in May
Day -45 to -30Pick up the child's report card from the old school, scan and copy 5 setsOriginals often stay with the old school, takes time to release
Day -30 to -21Process the new-address ID for both parents at DisdukcapilMany other documents reference the new ID — get it first, then proceed
Day -21 to -14Domicile certificate + old-city transfer letter + new-school acceptance letterThree documents must run in parallel — wait on one and everything stalls
Day -14 to -7Physical move + clean new unit + check utilitiesDon't combine moving day with paperwork errands — focus on one thing
Day -7 to -1Official registration at the new school, buy uniforms, buy booksBekasi uniform shops often run out of certain sizes by late June
Day 0 (school starts)Kid's first day, parents already settledAdaptation is much smoother when parents aren't panicking

Five Things Parents Consistently Forget Before Moving Day

From talking to four families (including Mr Iqbal), five small things consistently slip through:

  1. Health certificate from the old school. Several Bekasi Utara private schools require this, and without it the child has to re-test. Adds Rp 250-500k plus 3-5 days
  2. Personal Conduct Report (LKP). A psychosocial document parents rarely hold themselves. Ask the homeroom teacher before the move
  3. Extracurricular certificates. If the child has achievements (basketball, choir, scouts), some new schools weigh these. Collect them ahead of time
  4. Academic Zoom and Google Classroom accounts. Some schools use dedicated email accounts — ask the old school to transfer or export the history
  5. Updated vaccination certificates. Bekasi City primary and junior high schools require complete vaccination proof. Check the KIA book or PeduliLindungi app

Schools Near Kingspoint That Open Transfer Slots in May-June

Several options within a 3 km radius of Jl. Raya Perjuangan that, based on the three families' experience, opened transfer slots in May-June:

  • Al-Azhar Bekasi — primary, junior, and senior high; transfer quota limited to 5-10 per class; registration deadline usually end of May
  • BPK Penabur Bekasi — primary and junior high; internal psychological test required; first-week-of-June schedule
  • Sekolah Mutiara Bunda — primary and junior high; May deadline; short academic test in June
  • Public schools in Perjuangan subdistrict — SDN Perjuangan I/II/III; transfer via Disdik Bekasi City; quotas usually still open through end of June
  • Bekasi Utara public junior and senior high schools — zoning system; new-address ID required before registration

Note: quotas and schedules change year to year. Confirm directly with the receiving school at least 60 days before the child's move.

Practical note: The three families who pulled it off spent Rp 14-19 million on the move plus the new school setup. Mr Iqbal, who was late, added Rp 3.2 million in extra transport plus the cost of his child's harder adaptation. The difference between 60 days of planning and 30 days is significant.

What to Do Now if You're Targeting a June 2026 Move

If you're planning to move in June 2026 with kids starting school in July:

  1. This week, contact 2-3 target schools in Bekasi Utara. Ask about transfer quotas, registration deadlines, and required documents
  2. Confirm the handover date with the developer. If there's any delay risk, push the move to early July with buffer for the school transfer
  3. Start preparing the child's documents (report cards, certificates, digital accounts) by mid-May — don't wait for moving day
  4. Check new home renovation costs if the new unit needs final touches before the family moves in
  5. Budget Rp 16-20 million for the move plus the child's transfer plus new school supplies. Better to over-budget

Mrs Astrid, who I met last Saturday, eventually got Naya's transfer through on time. She said the most useful thing wasn't an online checklist but a direct conversation with the receiving school's principal in the second week of May — that's who finally told her about the remaining quota and which documents to prioritize.
