The Bekasi City fire and rescue service (Disdamkarmat Kota Bekasi) recorded 314 fires in 2025. Homes were the most common location, with 121 incidents, and electricity was the most common cause, with 206 cases. The agency's head, Abi Hurairah, gave those figures to RRI on 5 January 2026. The data does not separate out fires caused by charging electric vehicles, so don't read it as an electric-motorbike statistic.
The numbers still matter if you own an electric motorbike or e-bike. Charging runs through the same wiring as everything else in the house: the wall socket, the cable inside the wall, and the breaker next to the meter. The difference is that a charger draws power steadily for hours, while an iron or a microwave switches on for a while and then stops.
Charging indoors is fine if you do it properly
Ilman Fachrian Fadly, Head of Product at Polytron Electric Vehicle, told Medcom.id (6 November 2024) that the belief that charging an electric motorbike indoors is bound to start a fire is a myth, as long as it is done correctly. He charges at home every day. He stressed two conditions: plug straight into a socket fixed to the wall, never into an extension reel, and use the charger the manufacturer recommends. On extension reels, he warned that the wattage is high, the cable can overheat, and that is dangerous.
Power needs differ by model. Medcom.id noted that the Fox-S needs at least 900 watts of household supply and the Fox-R around 1,300 watts. Other brands have their own figures, so check your owner's manual before you choose a socket.
Five decisions before the first charge
1. One wall socket, not shared with heavy loads
The socket by the front of a two-storey house is often on the same circuit as the garden lights, the water pump, or the washing machine. If the bedroom air conditioner, the water heater and the charger all run at night, the breaker may trip. Worse, the cable can run at its limit without anyone noticing. Ask an electrician which circuit that socket is on and what your connected load is. Our article on power needs for a two-storey house shows how to add up the total.
2. Extension reels are for emergencies only
A long reel that is still wound on its drum traps heat, and a multi-plug adapter piles the load onto one point. If the wall socket is too far from where you park, have an electrician add a new socket. Joining two reels together to reach the bike doubles the problem.
3. Location: keep clear of the way out
A 4.5-metre-wide landed house such as the Emerald 70 usually has one front door, and the staircase is the only way down from the upstairs bedrooms. Don't charge the bike right in front of that door or under the stairs. If a battery fails in the middle of the night, smoke rises up the stairwell into the bedrooms while the bike blocks the exit. An open front area with good airflow is safer than a closed living room.
Removable e-bike batteries give you more options. Charge them on a hard floor, away from beds, sofas, curtains and leftover moving boxes.
4. Rainy season: protect the porch socket
The front of the house catches wind-blown rain in a heavy storm. Make sure an outdoor socket has a cover, the charger isn't sitting on a floor that can flood, and the cable won't get run over. A charging guide from Listrik Indonesia (December 2023) also asks for a well-ventilated charging spot with a dry floor.
5. Unplug when it's full
The same guide recommends unplugging the charger once the battery is full, and stopping if the bike or the charger gets too hot. Follow the charging time in your manual. A common household habit is plugging in before bed and only remembering the next morning. If you have to charge overnight, fit a plug-in timer so the power cuts off on its own.
Signs a battery should not be charged
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Battery casing swollen, cracked or leaking | Don't charge it. Take it to the brand's authorised workshop. |
| The bike has just ridden through water as high as the storage or battery deck | Hold off charging and have the authorised workshop check it. |
| Charger cable frayed or plug loose | Replace it with the charger the manufacturer recommends. |
| Burning smell, smoke, or popping sounds while charging | Get everyone away from the bike, leave the house, then call 112. |
For that last one, don't try to put the fire out yourself if you don't know what kind of fire you're dealing with. A battery-powered smoke alarm on the ceiling near the stairs gives an earlier warning, before smoke reaches the upstairs bedrooms.
Electric motorbikes and electric cars need different setups
Electric motorbikes and e-bikes usually manage on an ordinary socket in good condition. Electric cars are another matter: they draw more power, often need a wall charger, and sometimes need a supply upgrade from PLN. That is covered in our article on home charging an electric car in a cluster house.
Check the wiring before the bike arrives
A new house isn't automatically ready for a nightly charging load. Run through the checks in our electrical audit before moving into a new house: where the front sockets are, which breaker they sit on, and whether there is earth-leakage protection. If you are viewing an Emerald 70 unit at Kingspoint Residence on Jl. Raya Perjuangan, North Bekasi, ask directly where the front sockets are and what supply the unit has. The two-storey homes are about five minutes from Bekasi Station.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to charge an electric motorbike indoors?
It can be, if done properly. Polytron EV advises plugging straight into a wall socket rather than an extension reel, and using the charger the manufacturer recommends. Avoid charging in front of your only exit or under the stairs.
Can I leave an electric motorbike charging overnight?
Follow the charging time in your manual. Listrik Indonesia's guide recommends unplugging once the battery is full. If you must charge at night, use a plug-in timer so the power cuts off automatically.
How much household power does charging need?
It depends on the model. According to figures cited by Medcom.id, Polytron's Fox-S needs at least 900 watts and the Fox-R around 1,300 watts. Check your bike's figure in the manual, then add the other appliances that run at the same time.

Want to check the sockets in a Kingspoint unit?
Ask about the front-area sockets and the power supply of the Emerald 70 houses still available on Jl. Raya Perjuangan, North Bekasi.
